Deep in the heart of Arkansas' Ouachita National Forest, the search was on for 6-year-old Stephanie. Anxious crews carefully listened for a soothing, engine-like hum, a sign they were getting closer. Once the make-shift mound of dirt was in sight, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission biologists inched closer.
They heard that familiar sound and soon had their eyes on Stephanie, a protective black bear mother who was nestled safely in her winter den with two small cubs. That hum was the sound of healthy baby bears, nursing to their hearts content. "This is the top of the cake right here," said Myron Means, Arkansas Game and Fish Statewide Bear Program Coordinator. "Bear work is a lot of fun."
